CM visits CMA and educational institutions in New York 

Dispur, May 16: Assam Chief Minister Sri Tarun Gogoi visited Children Museum of Arts (CMA) in New York yesterday.

      Shri Gogoi took a first hand idea about the functioning of the CMA and plans to set up similar kind of museum in Assam. Lot of creative activities takes place in the museum where children participate in painting, games etc.

      The Chief Minister also visited New York City College of Technical, the City University of New York. He was apprised about the various courses presently being imparted in the college in the current scholastic year by Sri Chuck Hoffman, Director, Workforce Development Center, a division of Continuing Education of the University. The Chief Minister went round the labs and classes during his visit to the University.

      Shri Gogoi also met a delegation at New York who has evinced keen interest to invest in the energy sector. A meeting was also held with another industrial group pertaining to investment in Alternative Energy, Renewable Energy and Solar Energy. Senior representatives of the company expressed their desire to invest in these sectors in Assam and may visit Guwahati in June next. The Chief Minister attended a convocation meeting of New York University on May 14 last.

CM mourns death of former Vice President of India

      Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi mourned the death of former Vice President of India, Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who died at a hospital in New Delhi yesterday. In a condolence message from New York, Shri Gogoi said with the passing away of Shri Shekhawat a long political innings has come to a close. Shri Gogoi said Shri Shekhawat was a man of steely determination who rose from a humble position to become the country’s Vice President. He was deeply concerned of the welfare of the common people of the country. “A seasoned politician, Shri Shekhawat enjoyed the enviable reputation of having made friends across the political spectrum in his over five decades-long political career. The void created by the death of the veteran leader will be hard to fill,” he said.

Corporate sector must invest in a big way in agri sector: Assam CM 

Dispur, May 4: The corporate sector has to step in in a big way to boost the agriculture sector which, in turn, will bring about a sea change in the economic scenario of the country in general and the State in particular, said Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi at the Assam@75 – building competence, generating livelihood & creating sustainability – agenda for development - organised by CII, Assam State Council on the occasion of CII Assam Day in the city today.

Shri Gogoi said that the corporate houses have to put in more investments in agriculture and allied sector, the economic backbone of the country, for ushering in economic prosperity on all fronts.

The Chief Minister said that his Government has given more thrust to agriculture, health and education to catapult the State into a front-ranking State of the country. “Illiteracy, poverty and unemployment has to be done away with if a State has to proper,” he said.

Shri Gogoi said that his Government is committed to improving the economic lot of the small and marginal farmers whose land holding is less than an acre. “We have to look into their interests and provide them the necessary help and assistance,” he said.

Lauding the efforts of CII in promoting Assam, Shri Gogoi said that the thrust area has to be in the backward and far-flung places which happen to be breeding ground for insurgents and militants. “Our focus will be in the backward areas in the days ahead,” he added.

He also underscored the need for bridging the yawning gap between the have and have-nots.

The Chief Minister said another thrust area of the Government is to improve connectivity in a big way.

Shri Gogoi said that his Government has decided to set up an ITI and a model school in every block. He called upon the corporate sector to start join venture with the State Government towards this end, especially in skill development.

The Chief Minister further said that the Government is thinking of innovative ways to harness the vast water resources for development of the State. “We have to adopt new technology to tap huge water resources, channelise the Brahmaputra and reclaim land as well,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Industries & Commerce, Shri Pradyut Bordoloi said that the State has been fortunate enough to have got a forward-looking leadership in the present Chief Minister for taking the State along the road to glory and prosperity. “The changes we are witnessing on the development front are due to the paradigm shift of our present Government from development to peace and not the other way round,” he added.

He stressed on the need to bridge the widening disparity between State and region by ensuring economic equity across the country.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Dipankar Chatterji, Chairman, CII, North East Council, that the time is ripe to give development a shot in the arm as the people of the State and the entire country are yearning for allround progress. He said the vision document has been prepared with focus on ‘development, prosperity and confidence, keeping in mind the needs and aspirations of the people, the core competencies of the State vis-à-vis manpower, culture, water, bio-diversity etc.

Shri Chatterji said the vision document for Assam envisages people’s participation through municipal board and village unayyan committee; stimulating and enabling growth drivers of a higher order; widening its resource base through the PPP mode and rural empowerment and cultural revitalization to usher in prosperity for all.

He said the CII has embarked on a visioning exercise for the country and Assam@75 is a part of the organisation’s national agenda for a vision of India@75 to facilitate the country’s transformation to a global leader by 2022. “We all expect Assam, the leading State in the region, to play a major role in the country’s economic transformation in the next 15 years. Towards this end CII will put concerted efforts to make the vision for Assam@75 a reality,” said Shri Chatterji. The Chairman, CII, Assam State Council, Shri Bhupati K. Das also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, the Chief Minister felicitated and honoured Shri HP Barooah, Chairman & Managing Director of Barooah Associates, for his outstanding business leadership and enterprise.

“Access to sanitation and drinking water is a must to improve health”: Assam CM

Dispur, May 2: “Access to sanitation and pure drinking water is a must to improve the health of the people,” said Assam Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi at the State level Awards distribution function organized by State PHE at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre at Betkuchi in the city today.

Shri Gogoi said the thrust of the Government is to bring more and more areas under sanitation and extend pure drinking water especially in rural and far-flung areas. “More than the towns the rural areas are in need of sanitation and pure drinking water. We want to extend these facilities to the rural areas in a big way to bring about qualitative improvement in health which would, in turn, lead to more productivity and growth of GDP,” he said.

The Chief Minister further said that a massive awareness programmes have to be carried out by the PHED to involve more and more people for successful implementation of the sanitation and piped water schemes. “Participation of the people is a must for successful implementation of any programme,” he added.

Shri Gogoi said as the people of the State are afflicted with water borne diseases, total sanitation and piped drinking water are the panacea for reducing diseases in a big way.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for PHE, Shri Rihon Diamary said that under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) 28, 528 school sanitation blocks, 9812 baby friendly toilets in Anganwadi Centres and 9,07,805 individual household toilets have been constructed so far.

Shri Daimary said that with the allocation of funds from the State Plan more than 800 piped water supply schemes have been revived. “Water Supply Management Users’ Committees have been constituted for proper maintenance of the piped water supply projects. This is perhaps the only one of its kind in the country,” he added.

He further said that PHED has taken a slew of campaigns aimed at increasing community participation in rural water supply and sanitation facilities, besides creating awareness among the masses for community’s entitlement for ownership of the assets created under the TSC and piped water supply schemes.

The Minister for Social Welfare, Shri Akon Bora, stressed on the need for proper coordination between the PHE and Panchayat & Rural Development Departments for realizing the goals for total sanitation by 2012.

Earlier, the Additional Chief Secretary, PHE, Dr. Surajit Mitra said as the country has to entail huge loss in productivity and growth of GDP due to outbreak of water borne and excreta related diseases, access to sanitation and clean drinking water has to be ensured for one and all.

The Secretary, PHE, Shri Abhijit Dutta explained the objective of the function.

The Chief Minister gave away the prestigious Nirmal Gram Puraskar for the year 2009 to six Goan Panchayats viz., Beldubi under Jamadarhat block of Dhubri district, Uparhali under Rampur block and Kochpara under Chayani Barduar block of Kamrup district, Beseria under Gabharu block of Sonitpur district, Pulibar under Golaghat East block and Bengenakhowa under Golaghat East block of Golaghat district. Kochpara and Pulibar were awarded Rs 5 lakh in cash each while the other Goan Panchayats got Rs 4 lakh in cash besides a certificate and a memento.

Shri Gogoi also gave away the State level Uttam Gramya Panijogan Parichalana Puraskar for 2009-10 to ten water supply management users’ committees viz., Tupkhana (Cachar), Orang (Udalguri), Panibharal, Barikachuburi (Sonitpur), Fakiragram (Kokrajhar), Baghorbori (Kamrup), Bongalpukhuri (Jorhat), Bengenakhowa, Dadhara (Golaghat) and Borgohain (Sivasagar). Each committee got Rs. 30,000 in cash, a memento and a certificate. The Chief Minister also gave away the Gramya Jalamitra Puraskar for 2009-10 to three water supply users’ committees viz., Tarapur (Cachar), Barshapara (Kamrup) and Mishamara (Golaghat). Each committee got Rs 15,000 in cash and a certificate. These two awards were instituted by the State PHED for the first time with a view to encouraging community participation in the operation and maintenance of rural piped water supply schemes (PWSS).

CM mourns death of journalist Motiur Rahman 

Dispur, May 2: Chief Minister Shri Tarun Gogoi today mourned the tragic and untimely demise of Motiur Rahman, Sipajhar correspondent of Asomiya Pratidin and DY 365 at a city hospital yesterday.

      In a condolence message, Shri Gogoi said that it was tragic and unfortunate that journalist Rahman met with a serious accident while on duty and eventually succumbed to his injuries after battling for life. In his death, the State has lost a good journalist committed to the welfare of the people.

      The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
